The people of the Sankana Traditional Area in the Upper West Region have praised Ghana’s first female Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for her historic election.
According to the Traditional Council, her achievement reflects her distinguished leadership, unwavering dedication to public service, and lifelong commitment to education and national development.
“It is a testament to the progress Ghana continues to make in promoting gender inclusivity and empowering women to contribute meaningfully to governance and national transformation,” the Council added.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Sankana the President of the Sankana Traditional Council, Naa Pagraninge Sakoe Mornah III, through his secretary Eric Dakurah Faanuba, stated that Vice President Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who has been honored with the chieftaincy title of Pognaa Piirima Maaluuma of the Sankana Traditional Area, has shown a dedicated commitment to the development of the community over the years.
He noted that Pognaa Piirima Maaluuma among other things facilitated the construction of a daycare center in Sankana and the fencing of the Sankana cluster of schools during her tenure as the Minister of Education in President Mahama’s first term from 2013 to 2016.
The secretary added that, Prof. Naana has helped expose the Sankana community to the international community through research she conducted there with her colleagues.
In June 2024, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Piirima Maaluoma, was enskinned as a Queenmother within the Sankana Traditional Council. Her title, associated with rocks and water, symbolizes resilience, purity, and progress.
“The significance of the rocks in your political journey and the cleansing power of water serves as a profound metaphor for the strength and integrity that continue to define your path,” explained Naa Mornah.
The Council assured the Vice President of their unwavering support and prayers for a successful tenure. They expressed confidence that her leadership would enhance Ghana’s development agenda, ensuring equity, progress, and prosperity for all citizens.
At the event, the traditional council presented citations to Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Bagbin, in recognition of their unwavering dedication to the development of Ghana. They also announced plans to confer a chieftaincy title on Speaker Bagbin to signify the pride of the traditional council in him.
Furthermore, the Sankana Traditional Council prayed for the President, Vice President, Speaker, and Members of Parliament for a successful tenure.
