President John Dramani Mahama’s recent ministerial and general appointments have highlighted a growing emphasis on gender inclusion in governance.
Out of 25 nominees announced so far, seven are women, a significant step toward increasing female representation in leadership.
The nominated women include professionals from diverse fields, reflecting a deliberate effort to enhance gender balance in decision-making roles.
Below is a breakdown of the women nominated so far and their designated positions:
•Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey: Minister Designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
•Abla Dzifa Gomashie: Minister Designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
•Emelia Arthur: Minister Designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture.
•Elizabeth Ofosu: Minister Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry.
•Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey: Eastern Region Minister Designate.
•Charity Gardiner: Ahafo Region Minister Designate.
•Linda Ocloo: Greater Accra Region Minister Designate.
This composition reflects a 28% representation of women, a notable improvement in gender balance compared to previous administrations.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has also solidified his legacy as a leader committed to gender inclusion by appointing Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a Special Aide to President Mahama, also tweeted in support of the nominations, emphasising the administration’s strides toward achieving gender parity.
“These appointments are a testament to President Mahama’s unwavering dedication to empowering women and ensuring their voices are heard in governance,” she wrote.
While the representation of women remains below the global benchmark of 50%, the current nominations mark a progressive step for Ghana, where women have historically been underrepresented in top government roles.
Advocates for gender equity have commended the nominations but continue to call for sustained efforts to improve women’s participation across all sectors.
