UPSA petitioned to remove ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo as lecturer over alleged incitement comments on IGP

A formal petition has been submitted to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), calling for the removal of retired Police Officer Dr. Benjamin Agordzo from his position as a lecturer.

The petition, dated January 12, 2025, was authored by one Kojo Otchere, who raised concerns about Dr. Agordzo’s recent public comments and alleged past misconduct during his tenure in the Ghana Police Service.

Allegations in the petition

The petitioner cites recent remarks made by Dr. Agordzo on a television programme broadcast on TV3, where the retired officer allegedly incited junior police officers against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

According to the petition, Dr. Agordzo was captured on video stating, “Some police officers will mobilize and drive him [the IGP] out of office, mark my words. Police personnel will lock his door.” The video has been described as destabilising and dangerous by the petitioner.

The petition argues that such comments are unbecoming of a leadership lecturer and have the potential to undermine discipline within the Ghana Police Service and destabilise the country.

“By advocating for a breakdown in discipline, Dr. Agordzo, who is supposed to be a leadership lecturer, was setting the agenda for chaos and lawlessness in society,” the letter reads.

Additional allegations from RTI request

The petitioner also referenced information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) request, alleging a history of misconduct by Dr. Agordzo during his time in the Ghana Police Service.

According to the petition, Dr. Agordzo was lawfully convicted on six counts of misconduct, which led to his removal from the Police Service at one point. After serving nearly two years out of service, he was reportedly reinstated by the Police Council but demoted from the rank of Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent of Police.

“For a person lawfully convicted on six counts of misconduct to be a leadership lecturer at UPSA leaves much to be desired about the characters being employed and given leadership roles to mentor the next generation,” the petitioner wrote.

Calls for action

The petitioner has called on the Vice Chancellor to reconsider Dr. Agordzo’s appointment as a lecturer at UPSA.

He emphasised the potential reputational risks associated with retaining an individual who has allegedly demonstrated a pattern of misconduct and whose recent public comments have been widely criticised.

“It is on these bases—his incendiary public commentary and history as detailed in the RTI request—that I write to you to reconsider the appointment of Mr. Agordzo as a staff of your institution,” the letter concludes.

Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, a retired senior police officer, has been a vocal critic of certain policies and decisions within the Ghana Police Service.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra, has yet to issue a statement regarding the petition.
