The statue of former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, erected at the Effia Nkwanta roundabout in Sekondi-Takoradi, has been demolished under mysterious circumstances.
The incident was confirmed by top security officials to 3News and photos shows the “irreparable” damage.
The life-sized bronze statue, unveiled in November 2024 to honour the president, was reportedly vandalised overnight.
Images from the scene show the statue’s head severed and lying on the ground, with significant damage to the pedestal. The debris indicates a forceful removal, raising questions about the motives behind the act.
The damage to the statue is likely irreparable
Photos from the scene show the Akufo-Addo statue in a ruined state.
In one image, the severed head of the statue lies face-up on the ground, its expression still visible despite the damage.
Another image shows the toppled statue on its side, with fragments of the bronze structure scattered around.
The pedestal, which previously held the statue, remains in place but is heavily scratched and cracked. A plaque on the pedestal reads: “Thank you from Western Region. H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana. 6th November 2024.”
In another photo, the full extent of the destruction is visible, with the statue’s torso dislodged and resting against the broken pedestal. The scene, illuminated by vehicle lights, shows a grim picture of what was once a prominent landmark.
Background and initial agitations
The Akufo-Addo statue was unveiled at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Sekondi-Takoradi in November 2024.
The statue, however, has been the subject of controversy since its installation. Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi have previously called for its removal, arguing that it was inappropriate to place such a monument where the surrounding road was not completed.
Some critics also questioned the use of public funds for the statue’s construction, particularly during a period of economic hardship in the country.
In December 2024, right after Prez was declared winner of the 2024 elections, reports emerged of damage to the statue, with visible cracks and signs of wear. At the time, local authorities pledged to repair the monument and enhance security around it.
Despite these assurances, the statue has now been completely demolished.
