Ghana’s sports administration has undergone a significant restructuring, with the new government separating the Ministry of Youth and Sports into two standalone entities.
The decision, made under Section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327), was announced on Saturday by President John Dramani Mahama.
The newly formed Ministry of Sports and Recreation will oversee the country’s sports sector, while the youth sector will now be managed independently as the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment. This marks a departure from the longstanding union of youth and sports under one ministry.
The restructuring is part of a broader governmental reorganization that has reduced the number of ministries to 23, down from 30 under the previous administration.
President Mahama is expected to announce the 28th Sports Minister next week as part of the next round of ministerial appointments. Nii Lante Vanderpuije, a former Sports Minister, and Wisdom Kobla Woyome, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports during the eighth parliament, are considered leading contenders for the role.
