Mubarak Wakaso is nearing a move to Hearts of Oak, with the Ghanaian club reportedly reaching an agreement to sign the experienced midfielder in the January transfer window.
Wakaso has been without a club since January 2024, following his stint with Chinese side Shenzhen FC. His last competitive match was on August 23, 2023, leaving him out of action for over a year due to recurring knee injuries. Despite struggling with some knee pain, Wakaso has been training in Ghana, prompting Hearts of Oak to take a calculated chance on him.

According to a source close to the club, the Phobians plan to manage Wakaso’s workload carefully, limiting him to selected high-profile matches while avoiding long trips. This approach mirrors the treatment given to Sulley Muntari during the 2022/23 season, which proved effective. Hearts believe Wakaso’s experience will enhance the team and serve as a learning opportunity for younger players.
The 34-year-old has had a great career, playing for European clubs such as Villarreal, Panathinaikos, Espanyol, and Rubin Kazan. With 70 caps and 13 goals for Ghana, including the Golden Boot at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Wakaso brings invaluable experience.
Currently sixth in the Ghana Premier League, Hearts aim to strengthen under coach Aboubakar Ouattara and finish the season strongly. Wakaso could provide the consistency and leadership they need.
