The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken decisive action in response to examination irregularities detected during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
Following investigations, WAEC has announced the cancellation and withholding of results for thousands of candidates involved in malpractices.
Cancelled results
WAEC disclosed in a press release available to 3News.com that the results of a significant number of candidates have been affected:
Cancellation of subject results: The subject results of 4,108 candidates have been cancelled for bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the examination halls.
Cancellation of entire results: A total of 483 candidates had their entire examination results cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the examination halls, a strict violation of WAEC’s regulations.
Withheld results
Additionally, WAEC has withheld results for further investigations:
Subject results withheld: Results of 781 candidates are being withheld for various suspected offences.
Entire results withheld: Results of 209 candidates have been withheld as investigations into alleged malpractices continue.
The council also revealed that results from candidates in 319 schools have been flagged for alleged collusion. These results are currently under investigation and may either be released or cancelled based on the outcome of the probe.
These measures reflect WAEC’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations. In a press statement, WAEC expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring a successful examination process.
John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, emphasized that the council is determined to ensure fair and credible assessments, urging candidates and schools to uphold ethical standards during examinations.
WAEC’s actions serve as a reminder of its zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractices.
