Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has asserted that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was more powerful than President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo while he was in office.
He said this on the Key Points show hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
According to Appiah-Kubi, Ofori-Atta’s influence undermined the authority of the President.
“Ken Ofori-Atta was more powerful than Nana Akufo-Addo,” Appiah-Kubi stated emphatically during the discussion, which focused on the outcome of the elections.
Critics argue that his close familial relationship with the President, as a cousin, contributed to his apparent authority in decision-making processes within the government.
Mr Appiah-Kubi also claimed that “the establishment” within his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), actively worked against him.
“The establishment worked against me,” Appiah-Kubi asserted, lamenting the challenges he faced within the party’s structures.
His comments come in the wake of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regain power.
Appiah-Kubi’s statement adds to ongoing discussions about the internal divisions and alleged favoritism that have plagued the NPP, contributing to its loss at the polls.
These grievances reflect broader concerns about party unity and inclusivity, with many members reportedly sidelined by influential factions.
As the NPP begins its post-election reflections, Appiah-Kubi’s comments highlight the need for introspection and reform within the party to regain the trust of its members and the Ghanaian electorate.
