Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong has embraced his Ghanaian heritage, admitting he speaks Ghanaian local dialect twi with his parents at home.
Born to Ghanaian parents in the Netherlands, Jeremie Frimpong moved to England at the age of seven.
The defender was eligible to play for Ghana, Netherlands and England. However, the wing-back opted to play for the Dutch.
Frimpong made his debut for the Netherlands in 2023 during the 2024 European Championship qualifiers after representing the Netherlands at youth level.
“My parents are Ghanaians, so every time I speak to my parents it is twi. They are the ones who taught me the language so when I am home I speak twi with them. I have never been to Ghana but I will go. I learned twi from my parents,” he told Nigerian reporter Oma Akatugba after Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Frimpong was an integral part of Leverkusen’s team in the 2023/24 season as the team went undefeated throughout the campaign en route to Bundesliga and DFB Pokal victories.
The 24-year-old has contributed four goals (two goals, two assists) in the Bundesliga this term while providing four assists in the Uefa Champions League.
Frimpong is yet to hit his impressive 24-goal contribution mark from last term but will be hoping to find his feat as the season wears on.
