The People’s National Party (PNP) has condemned the recent spate of post-election violence across the country.
Some persons suspected to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have vandalized properties and attacks some citizens following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as winner of the December 7 elections.
In a statement issued by National Leader and Founder Janet Asana Nabla, the PNP said the attacks are an affront to Ghana’s democratic credentials.
“These acts of aggression, destruction, and intimidation are an affront to Ghana’s democracy and a
blatant attempt to undermine the rule of law,” she stated on Wednesday, December 11.
“The main aim of these violent actions appears to be the NDC’s belief that their party has won power, and as such, they are taking over state institutions without
waiting for the official handing-over ceremony and the inauguration of the president-elect into office.
“This lawlessness disregards the orderly transition process that is fundamental to democratic governance.”
The PNP fears if this is characteristic of the government-in-waiting, then “one can only imagine the tyranny and chaos that would
characterise a military regime”.
It pointed out that state institutions are pillars of democracy and their independence must be safeguarded against political intimidation and violence.
The latest political party to be founded, therefore, called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama, as leader of the NDC, “to demonstrate leadership by
immediately calling his supporters to order”.
“The President-elect must take responsibility and ensure that
his party ceases these reckless actions, which are tarnishing Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.”
The opposition party also urged the security forces to take swift action by arresting the perpetrators of these crimes.
“The law must be enforced to serve as a deterrent to those who seek to destabilise our nation through violence and intimidation.”
The PNP further appealed to the international community, civil society organisations, academia, religious bodies, and the media to condemn the heinous acts.
“Silence in the face of such lawlessness is tantamount to complicity and sets a dangerous precedent for our nation.
“If these critical institutions fail to act, it will signal their acceptance of violence as a legitimate tool for political engagement—a norm
that threatens the very fabric of our democracy.”
The PNP pledged its commitment to peace, justice, and the rule of law, urging all stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of state institutions and “protect the democratic values that bind us together as a nation”.
