President-elect John Dramani Mahama has said that it will be necessary for him and outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to keep the channel of communication between them active even after the transitional process.
Mr Mahama said he was happy that President Akufo-Addo expressed his readiness to cooperate with him to ensure Ghana’s democracy is consolidated.
Addressing the media after the inauguration of the Presidential Transition team on Wednesday, December 11, at the seat of government on Wednesday, December 11, he said “Mr President has given me a brief on the security situation both internal and external and also a short brief on issues to do with the economy of course the transitional team will drill down further on these matters.
“I am happy with the assurances that we are going to work together to ensure a seemliness transition. I believe that even after the transition it will be necessary for us to continue to keep the channel of communications so that Ghana’s democratic credentials are consolidated and we all work in the nation’s interest.”
For his part, President Akufo-Addo has celebrated Ghana’s achievement as a functioning, effective democratic state which respects the will of the people.
He also said Ghana is a country that respects human rights and the rule of law and where we are all secure in our daily lives.
President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring that the incoming administration has all the necessary resources and support to hit the ground running.
“All of it is in order to make sure that our nation Ghana continues to march forward as a functioning, effective democratic state which respects the will of the people, which respects human rights and the rule of law and where we are all secure in our daily lives.
“We have spoken a little bit about the issues that have occurred, and the seeming lawlessness that have taken place, I expressed my happiness with his intervention yesterday he spoke to the country about what is going on, reinforcing the authority of the state that these matters are dealt with,
“It has been a warm and constrictive engagement, the president and I have known each other for nearly 20 years, we met in parliament in 1997 and have remained good friends. ever since.”
