The Sports Writers Association of Ghana, SWAG, has urged President-elect, His-Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to increase sports funding as well as prioritize the growth of sports under his administration.
The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, was re-elected as head of state after winning the 2024 general elections with a staggering 1,671,093 vote difference as compared to his closest rival, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The former president was then officially declared winner by Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, 2024, 48 hours after the closure of polls.
As part of its congratulatory message to the incoming president, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, which is headed by ace journalist Kwabena Yeboah, wrote: ” SWAG urges the President-Elect to increase funding for sports development, develop a comprehensive sports policy, support grassroots sports development, create sports employment and make the sports sector a major part of the economy.” .
Kwabena Yeboah went on to further explain that: “This vision has the potential to unlock the vast talents of Ghanaian youth, promote national unity, and generate significant revenue for the country.”
John Mahama is expected to be sworn into office to begin his second and final term as president of Ghana on January 7, 2025.
