Ghanaian entertainment personalities elected as MPs for 9th Parliament  

Ghana’s 2024 elections have rounded up after over 48 hours since December 7 when polls were closed.

On December 9, 2024, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa officially declared John Mahama as the President elect winning with 56.5% of the total votes cast.

However, during the elections, some entertainment personalities from both NDC and NPP contested for parliamentary seats in some constituencies.

John Setor Dumelo wins Ayawaso West Wuogon seat

The actor turned politician and businessman contested on the ticket of the NDC in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency. This was his second time contesting with Lydia Seyram Alhassan who won in the 2020 elections.

Dumelo managed to unseat the incumbent MP, Lydia Alhassan after a landslide victory. He polled 47,560 votes while Lydia Seyram secured 39,214 votes winning with a huge margin.

John Dumelo’s win is seen as a significant shift in Ayawaso West Wuogon as the constituency is considered one of the NPP’s stronghold.

Baba Sadiq wins Okaikwei Central seat

Music entrepreneur turned politician, Baba Sadiq after hours of confrontation and disagreement was declared MP elect for the Okaikwei Central.

He contested on the ticket of the NDC beating the incumbent MP, Patrick Boamah. This was Baba Sadiq’s first election contesting on the ticket of the NDC in the constituency.

He managed to poll 15,383 votes while Patrick Boamah garnered 14, 989 votes. The results were announced from the collation of results from 141 polling stations representing 78 percent.

A Plus wins Gomoa Central seat

Kwame Asare Obeng Asare, known popularly as Kwame A-plus, emerged MP elect for the Gomoa Central constituency after contesting as an independent candidate.

Kwame A-plus won the election by beating the incumbent member of Parliament Naana Eyiah by 14,277 votes out of 36,026 total number of valid votes cast, leaving 11,637 for Naana Eyiah of the NPP and 10,112 for Ywason Mohamed of the NDC.

The musician who once aligned with the NPP decided to contest as an Independent candiate after falling out with the party.

Kwame Asare Obeng, a first-time contestant left the incumbent MP for the constituency and her supporters in shock.
