A 10,000 capacity stadium facility has been opened at Hohoe in the Volta region by the Member of Parliament for the area, John-Peter Amewu.
Initial works began on the Hohoe stadium project in 2005 as an initiative by Mr. Amewu who served as the Municipal Chief Executive for Hohoe during the Kufuor administration.
The project however stalled for several years when the NPP exited office in 2008 and only resumed after 2017.
The MP, now the Minister of Railways Development, during the commissioning indicated that the project was funded by benevolent individuals who constantly donated money towards its execution.
The facility has a standard football field and comes with several other ancillary facilities.
At the officiall ceremony attended by Ghanaian football legend, Abedi Ayew Pele and President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Hohoe MP announced that the facility will help push the development of football talents in the area and expressed appreciation to the Chiefs and individuals who supported the initiative since the start.
“It is not an effort of one individual, it’s an effort of everybody and I give the credit in construction of this stadium to the good people of Hohoe because the motivation to do it is driven from their participation in sporting activities,” he stated.
The new sports stadium is currently being used by Division One side, Hohoe United for their home matches.
The opening of the facility is also intended to propel the growth of local businesses as football teams and enthusiasts are expected to visit the venue regularly.
The opening ceremony saw a fun game between a select side of former Black Stars players which included John Painstil, John Mensah, Agyemang Badu, Aminu Dramani, Fatawu Dauda and the select side of Hohoe.
The game ended 4-1 in favour of the star-studded side of the former Black Stars drawing an overwhelming crowd of spectators to the stadium.
