Three children are reported to have been burnt to death while three others sustained varying degrees of injury after a blazing fire gutted their apartment at Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The fire also destroyed properties estimated to be thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The deceased whose names are yet unknown are believed to be between the ages of five and ten years.
A resident of the area, Lord Listowel, who confirmed the incident to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show indicated that a family of six were in the apartment at the time of the fire outbreak.
“Their parents and the last born survived but the three other children whose ages are between 5 and 10 burnt beyond recognition. The survivors are currently at the Axim government hospital receiving treatment but their condition is not encouraging”, he added.
Father of the deceased children, Kwame Asare who also sustained serious injuries indicated that he was helpless when the incident occurred.
“We all went to sleep at around 9 pm just after eating. At midnight, I heard a sound that I thought was thunder but suddenly everywhere became dark and full of smoke. I was able to rescue my wife and one child. I had sustained burn wounds and was helpless so I rushed out and started shouting for help but it was too late. My other three children had already been burnt to death”, he indicated.
Remains of the three children have since been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital for further investigations.
