It’s undeniable. This year, 2024, has tested us. The weight of economic hardship, the simmering frustration that boils over into social unrest, the constant uncertainty – it’s all left a mark on the Ghanaian soul.
We’ve seen businesses struggle and shut down (the foreign ones, just packed up their bags and left to neighbouring countries), families stretched thin, and dreams put on hold. It would be easy to succumb to cynicism, to let the challenges dim our collective spirit.
But that’s not the Ghanaian way, is it?
Even when the road is rough, there’s resilience in our people, a refusal to be defined by difficulty. And as part of people who cover the news 24/7, we see it every day – the tireless entrepreneurs hustling to make ends meet, the few educators going above and beyond for their students, the demonstrators on the street, the artists who bring beauty and light into our lives – and the everyday Ghanaian, who keeps striving even as they nearly collapse under the weight of these burdens.
These are the stories that need to be told. These are the individuals who deserve to be celebrated.
That’s why, at MG Digital Media, we are starting the “People of the Year” honour scheme under the 3News brand.
This is a deliberate act of defiance against the negativity that threatens to consume us. It’s a platform to showcase the very best of Ghana – the individuals who embody hope, innovation, and unwavering dedication to building a better future.
Think of the young woman in the Northern Region who, despite facing immense challenges, is revolutionising farming practices in her village. Think of the tech genius in Kumasi developing apps that connect rural communities to vital services. Think of young leaders who are challenging the status quo across the political scene and calling out flaws in the “establishment”.
These are the stories that inspire us. These are the people who remind us that even in the darkest of times, there is light.
“People of the Year” is our way of amplifying these voices, of shining a spotlight on the individuals who are making a real difference in Ghana. It’s about recognizing their achievements, celebrating their spirit, and inspiring others to follow their lead.
This year, more than ever, we need to remind ourselves of the power of the human spirit. We need to celebrate those who are making Ghana proud. We need to believe in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.
Join us on this journey. Nominate the people that have stood out this year. Vote for the finalists who inspire you. Let’s come together to celebrate the “People of the Year” and reaffirm our faith in the Ghanaian spirit.
Because even when times are tough, Ghana shines brightest when her people shine.
