Laryea Kingston has finally opened up about his decision to step down as Ghana’s U-17 coach, stating that he found the environment unhealthy.
Kingston resigned after Ghana failed to qualify for the AFCON, following their defeat to Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU B Championship in Legon.
Kingston implied that he felt unappreciated throughout his career, from his days as a player to his role as a coach.
However, the Ghana FA claimed he exhibited unprofessional behaviour during the tournament, including going AWOL before it concluded.
“I don’t think it’s a runaway. This is a typical example of how you should work hard and not only work hard when people are watching you. As soon as I resigned then the emails started coming,” Kingston told Joy Sports.
“The environment was not healthy for me, so that is the more reason why I resigned.”
He also expressed his willingness to return to Ghana’s football scene under the right circumstances: “For me, any day Ghana calls upon me and they will allow me and support me 110%, I am going to come back and give back to my country because this is what we are all looking for.”
Kingston added, “CK Akonnor played the game and coached the game as well, so if there is anything at all, people like us need more to give to our soccer at the moment than anything else.”
Currently, Kingston heads RPS Academies in the United States.
