Manchester City have been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfielder Rodri will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 28-year-old sustained the injury during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Arsenal after a collision with Thomas Partey.
City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed that the midfielder underwent surgery on Friday and will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
“He had surgery this morning—ACL and some meniscus. So, next season he will be here. This season is over for him,” Guardiola said.
Rodri’s absence comes as a major setback for City, who relied heavily on the Spanish midfielder during last season’s title race, which saw them edge Arsenal for their fourth consecutive Premier League crown.
Guardiola admitted Rodri’s importance to the team, noting that City lost four of the five games he missed last season.
“What he gives us, we don’t have a similar player,” said Guardiola. “But the others can all together replace what Rodri has given since his arrival. We will have to do it as a team.”
Guardiola hinted that the club may explore the transfer market in January depending on the impact of Rodri’s absence.
In addition to the Spanish, City are also currently without Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, who is expected to miss their Premier League clash with Newcastle United and may not return until after the October international break.
