Barcelona have announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone surgery following a severe injury – a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee.
Ter Stegen’s season went from bad to worse after facing criticism for his poor Champions League performance against Monaco.
He suffered the injury during Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Villarreal, leading to his immediate hospitalisation.
While no specific timeline has been set for his return, it is expected Ter Stegen will be out for an extended period, putting his availability for the rest of the season in doubt.
This adds to Barcelona’s injury concerns, with key players such as Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Andreas Christensen, and Marc Bernal already sidelined.
Inaki Peña is expected to start against Getafe in Ter Stegen’s absence, though Barcelona may consider signing another goalkeeper to strengthen their options for the remainder of the season.
