After two winless matches, Hearts of Oak secured their first victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Bechem United on Sunday at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Coach Aboubakar Ouattara and his side entered the match under significant pressure, having suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening two Ghana Premier League (GPL) games for the first time in 14 years, reminiscent of the 2009/10 losses to King Faisal and Heart of Lions.
After a goalless first half, Hearts of Oak found their stride in the second, with goals from Ransford Mensah and Hamzah Issah sealing a much-needed win for the Phobians. The victory also marked their first home success of the season.
Despite the relief, Ouattara urged fans to stay grounded, stressing the importance of focusing on the club’s long-term project. “Hearts of Oak has a big project. The goal is to build a strong team capable of conquering, not just to win for the sake of it,” he said.
“Today, I kept faith in the team, and they responded well. It shows that we are human, but also that I am learning from these experiences and not repeating mistakes.”
The win lifts Hearts of Oak to 10th in the standings as they prepare for their next match away to Nations FC, while Bechem United remains winless and goalless after three rounds.
