In less than 24 hours, the Chief and people of Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region will hold a musical concert, as part of activities for this year’s Kundum festival.
The expectation is that patrons should be excited, eagerly preparing and waiting.
Each year, as part of the Kundum festival, Axim witnesses a mega musical concert – the most anticipated highlight – which is meant to create a bond in the midst of differences among the inhabitants.
And, like years before, this year, many people from far and near are reported to have circled the event on their calendars, also because of previous testimonies and the lineup of artistes to thrill patrons.
However, this year’s concert and the venue could potentially be chaotic. That’s because in circulation are two separate posters announcing the same event, with the same date and at the same venue.
ConnectNews is reliably informed that the two main political parties – NDC and NPP – each lay claim to one. What is more striking is how each poster has a lineup of musicians who have either openly endorsed NPP or NDC, or has a song meant to galvanize votes ahead of election 2024, clearly signaling who is behind which event.
Businesses and residents in Axim do not find the unfolding spectacle amusing the least, considering how tumultuous the town will be should nothing change.
Already, the cloud of uncertainty hanging in the town is having a toll on leisure and recreational centers, who cash in during Kundum.
“Majority of people who have booked were expected to come on Friday, but they have asked us to hold on to their bookings. And they complain about the two different posters in circulation. It’s really frustrating,” an administrator at one of the leisure facilities, who does not want to be named, said.
For some residents, it is strange for the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to put people in a state of apprehension, as they have not said a word since the two posters came out. Residents are wondering what has been done to avert any danger.
“These posters have been in circulation for days, and we have not heard anything from the assembly or the police. We cannot live our lives in fear,” 30-year-old Michael Arthur, who has a business close to the venue, Victoria Park, said.
Indications are that none of the political parties are willing to back down, as the event is meant to solicit support as election 2024 beckons.
ConnectNews reached out to representatives of the two main political parties, but they declined to comment.
