The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid public demonstrations and street protests over issues with the Voters Register.
In a recent statement, Samuel Tettey, Deputy Electoral Commissioner in charge of operations, emphasized that demonstrations would not help resolve discrepancies in the register.
“Demonstrations will not ensure a credible register and could instead lead to unnecessary tension and suspicion,” Tettey stated. He highlighted that the Voter Exhibition Exercise itself serves as an audit mechanism to identify and correct discrepancies in the Provisional Voters Register.
Tettey stressed that the EC’s procedures are designed to address electoral issues effectively. “The Exhibition Exercise itself is an audit. It unearths discrepancies and allows for prescribed legal processes to correct them,” he said.
He further urged the NDC to engage in constructive dialogue rather than public protests: “The best way to resolve these issues is through discussion at the table, not through demonstrations.”
The EC has been addressing concerns raised by the NDC, including the identification of deceased individuals on the register. “
The NDC has urged party supporters to go to offices of the Electoral Commission (EC) across the country and demonstrate on September 17.
This follows the party’s announcement to stage a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, against the EC over concerns about discrepancies in the voters register.
However, the electoral Commission says it remains dedicated to a transparent process and is calling for cooperation. “We urge the NDC to submit details of the discrepancies they have identified so we can investigate and resolve them,” Tettey concluded.
