The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman Constituency, Pius Enam Hadzide, has justified a campaign promise to send interested constituents to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to support the Black Stars if they qualify.
He said his message has just been twisted by his opponents who are being mischievous because they are threatened by the inroads he is making in the constituency.
He said he spoke on several issues for more than 2 hours but his opponents just decided to use the promise to paint in bad light.
Speaking on Yensempa on Onua FM on Thursday, September 12, however, the former Deputy Youth and Sports Minister said the people of Asuogyaman are no different from any other Ghanaian who would want to travel anywhere in the world to support the senior national men’s soccer team.
He justified the promise, saying not only is he happy about it but also the constituents he was addressing.
The latest promise comes years after the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) was accused of engaging in visa racketeering regarding the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
Then the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Enam Hadzide was accused of sending some lay Ghanaians who posed as journalists to Australia as part of the country’s delegation to the 2018 Games.
He has since been cleared of any wrongdoing.
He insisted that the young people he helped to travel to Australia were going there for a different purpose and that he had started the process way before the Commonwealth Games.
“Myself, I did not set foot at the Commonwealth Games to even say I sent people there,” he explained to host Nana Yaa Brefo Danso.
“I was helping those I helped way before the Games. I ensured that they applied for the visa, made sure it arrived and even gave them stipends and assisted with their tickets.
“Even today that I am speaking, one of them will soon become a lawyer and when he comes and the people of Ausogyaman have a case and he helps them after going through the Ghana Bar Association course, isn’t it a blessing to all Asuogyaman and Ghana as a whole?”
He said the negative spin should be disregarded and even as a Parliamentary Candidate, he has done more for the people of Asuogyaman than the Member of Parliament, who served as a District Chief Executive (DCE) before becoming a lawmaker for eight years.
