The Ministry of Youth and Sports has instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to inspect the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium as potential venues for the Black Stars’ next match.
This directive follows CAF’s decision to ban the Baba Yara Stadium, which was Ghana’s only CAF-approved venue for hosting international games.
The ban comes after multiple warnings regarding the state of the pitch, with the final blow being Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Angola on a substandard surface.
Following the match, CAF ordered the GFA to seek an alternative venue abroad for the next Black Stars game.
The decision has sparked widespread criticism of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority, which manages Ghana’s sporting facilities. In response, the Sports Ministry has issued a statement urging the GFA to push for CAF to inspect other venues.
They highlighted the Accra Sports Stadium, claiming that concerns raised by CAF during its last use have been addressed, and the University of Ghana Stadium, which successfully hosted the African Games and the U-17 WAFU B Championship earlier this year.
The Ministry is hopeful that either stadium will receive CAF approval ahead of Ghana’s crucial must-win 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.
The GFA is expected to relay the Ministry’s message to CAF, with a decision in the coming days on whether the match will be played in Ghana or abroad.
