Former President John Mahama has called on religious leaders to always abide by the truth and speak truth to power, especially political leaders.
Speaking at a gathering of religious leaders in Sunyani on the second of his four-day campaign tour to the Bono region, Mr Mahama emphasized the importance of honesty and integrity in their leadership roles.
John Mahama said such a posture, even when actions and inactions of duty bearers continue to put economic pressure on citizens, religious leaders must have the moral right to speak against it.
“The Bible and the Quran enjoin us to always abide by the truth and abiding by the truth is being able to say it as it is without fear and favour, without recognition of which government is in office or which government is not in office,” he said.
Mr. Mahama also urged religious leaders to be impartial and objective in their teachings, focusing on promoting unity and understanding among their followers.
He highlighted the role of religious leaders in shaping public opinion and called on them to use their platforms to promote peace and harmony in society.
In conclusion, Mahama reiterated the importance of always abiding by the truth and urged religious leaders to uphold moral values and integrity in their leadership.
“The action of your leaders affects your congregation and affects you directly. Indeed you are the best gauge when the economy is not going well because when the congregation is going through hardship you are the first point of contact they come to” he emphasized.
The former President’s remarks serve as a reminder to religious leaders to always prioritize truth and honesty in their teachings and interactions with their followers. It is essential for religious leaders to lead by example and promote unity and understanding in society.
Meanwhile, the Deputy minority chief whip and member of Parliament for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim, entreated the religious leaders to mount pressure on president Akufo Addo to assent to the LGBTQI bill to protect the Christian and Islamic faith.
