Partey scored an elusive first Premier league goal after 18 months, so did Antoine Semenyo sparkle for Bournemouth, but how did Ghanaian Stars generally fare in gameweek two of the Premier League? 3Sports takes a look
Arsenal — Thomas Partey
The lynchpin was decisive in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa in Saturday’s late kick off at Villa Park.
The 31-year old started his second Premier League match in as many games and was instrumental in a gut-wrenching game. Arsenal’s previous two defeats to Villa left fans in trepidation prior to kick off.
However, Villa forward Ollie Watkins was culpable of profligacy, keeping Arsenal in the game, coupled with a smart double stop from goalkeeper David Raya to deny Villa.
With 70 touches and an 89% passing accuracy, Partey steadily asserted himself on the game and grabbed a first league goal since March 4, 2023. Partey will be crucial if Arsenal are to be crowned champions in May.
Bournemouth — Antoine Semenyo
Full of positivity, full of running. Such was the performance of Antoine Semenyo as Newcastle earned a precious point at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth on Sunday.
Semenyo was a menace for Newcastle’s defence, with his constant probing, and should have broken the deadlock after 26 minutes but for the crossbar; He maneuvered his way to the edge of Newcastle’s box before he let fly from his weaker left foot.
Nick Pope had his bar to thank after it rattled the frame and went high and wide.
Semenyo’s persistence and growing impact saw him nick a deserved assist as he squared the ball to an unmarked Marcus Tavernier, who prodded into the gaping goal.
His 3 key passes and 3 big chances created underscored his importance and contribution to the Cherries.
Leicester City — Jordan Ayew and Fatawu Issahaku
It was not the dream start Jordan would have envisaged. Leicester went behind 7 minutes after his introduction in the second half and failed to get back into the game, losing 2-1 to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Though having limited time, Ayew was able to get in the act, providing a key pass as Leicester looked for a way back into the game, whereas Issahaku built on his impressive Premier League debut with a gritty performance.
Issahaku helped Leicester City, who were on the back foot for large parts of the game, with the most tackles in the game (5) and 2 interceptions to go with his defensive works.
The Foxes are still winless in their return to the top-flight and will be eager to hit the ground running in their next league outing against Aston Villa.
West Ham — Mohammed Kudus
Kudus enjoyed a relatively quiet afternoon at Selhurst park on Saturday as West Ham emerged 2-0 victors over Crystal Palace.
Tomas Soucek and skipper Jarrod Bowen bagged the goals as the Hammers nailed Palace for their first league win of the season.
Kudus kept it simple and tidy, managing a 100% pass success rate in the process.
Meanwhile, Tariq Lamptey was fit enough to make the bench for Brighton and Hove Albion as the Seagulls beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Ammex to kick- start the weekends action, while Kamaldeen Sulemana was not a part of the Southampton squad which lost by a lone goal to Nottingham Forest at St Mary’s.
