Medeama secured their first Ghana Premier League title in the 2022/2023 season, becoming the first club from the Western region to achieve this feat in over four decades.
However, their participation in the CAF Champions League appeared to affect their performance, resulting in an eighth-place finish.
The club has managed to retain a significant portion of their squad from the previous season, which is facilitating team cohesion as the technical team works to address the team’s weaknesses.
Head coach Nebojsa Kapor’s drive for success remains strong, as does that of technical director Evans Adotey and the players.
Godknows Dzakpasu has expressed the Tarkwa-based club’s determination to improve upon last season’s performance.
“It has been good, we’re really responding to the rhythm of the coach and we’re pushing very hard. Last season, in the first round, we were okay but getting to the latter part we started losing like three matches at the end of the season. That’s when we came down a bit so we’re working towards that side so that we’ll have a very good season, he said.
The offensive line is expected to be bolstered by Joshua Agyemang, Nana Kofi Babil, and new signing Andy Kumi. These strikers, all with prior GPL experience, are anticipated to form a potent attacking force alongside 2020/2021 GPL top scorer Diawisie Taylor.
Taylor, who recently returned to Ghana’s top flight after stints with Al Merreik and Future FC in Sudan, joined Medeama midway through last season. Despite a lacklustre initial performance, the former GPL champion is eager to make a stronger impact this season.
“I could only start during the second half of the season because of how I stayed home for long. This actually affected my performance but I believe everything is set for me this season and everything will be different because as a striker, the target is to score goals to help win individual awards. That’s my every season target, to score and win the Golden Boot so I’m praying unto God to help make everything become successful,” he also added.
Fatawu Sulemana, one of the team’s veteran players, is set for his second stint with the club after a year at Al Merreik. The experienced wing-back is committed to contributing to the team’s success in the upcoming
season.
“I learnt a lot when I went to Sudan and when I returned to Ghana I went back to Portugal and I learnt a lot there. But I had to return because of some reason.
When I came back you could see there’s been a difference in my performance when I’m playing, all the petty mistakes I was doing I’ve learnt not to do it anymore and we’re here to push the team forward,” Fatawu also added.
Medeama enters the new season with a blend of experienced players and fresh talent, coupled with a strong determination to build on their recent success. While the challenges of balancing domestic and continental competitions are evident, the team’s retained core and strategic additions suggest they are well-positioned to compete at the highest level.
