The retrofitting work being done in the chamber of Parliament will cost €2.26 millions.
The cost, according to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin is being borne by the Government of Ghana.
Only damaged desks or the worktables would be replaced, but new chairs would be procured here in Ghana. The old furniture, according to the Speaker would be auctioned.
Currently, all the desks, chairs, carpets among others have all been moved out. Rewiring is taking place for a whole new conferencing system.
The retrofitting of the chamber started some two weeks ago and the Mr Alban Bagbin has been there to inspect progress of work. After the work is done, there is going to be a new chamber with new furniture.
It will be recalled that in 2014, the Parliamentary Service renovated the chamber with new furniture procured from China which did not go down well with Ghanaian taxpayers.
The tablets that were fitted on the MPs’ desk never functioned as expected and now they have been taken away to be replaced.
Officials of the Parliamentary Service complained of consistent break down of the old microphone system, usually leading to unnecessary suspension of proceedings of the house.
The Speaker Bagbin indicated that the expected recall of the House in September would not bepossible due to the retrofitting work which is expected to be completed by the end of October.
All things being equal, if members of Parliament resume work in October, they will have an experience of a new retrofitted chamber and of course it is also in preparation for the 9th Parliament in January 2025.
