Manchester City have re-signed Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year deal, with an option for an additional 12 months.
The 33-year-old returns after a year in Spain. Gundogan enjoyed a trophy-laden first spell at the Etihad, winning 14 titles and scoring 60 goals in 304 appearances.
Gundogan said he is seven years at Manchester City were pure contentment, both on and off the pitch. He admitted his immense respect for Pep and “can’t wait to wear the City shirt again.”
Gundogan’s departure from Barcelona, where he had an impressive debut season, was influenced by the club’s financial constraints and their need to register new signing Dani Olmo. His exit helps Barcelona comply with La Liga’s spending restrictions.
Gundogan, who retired from international football after Euro 2024, leaves Barcelona with gratitude for his time there.
He was Pep Guardiola’s first signing at City in 2016.
