Students at the Accra College of Education have welcomed the proposal to close down the school over halt in academic activities due to the strike by their teachers.
The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), in a statement to the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education-Ghana demanded the closure of all the 46 public Colleges of Education across the country by Monday, August 12.
The group also wants the current academic calendar to be revised, insisting 54 days of no academic work has rendered the current semester useless.
The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has been on strike since June 14. They have accused government of failing to address concerns related to their conditions of service.
TTAG members want the end of semester examination to be rescheduled.
In an interview with 3news, some students at the Accra College of Education welcomed the proposal.
“I think it’s good, but it should have been made long ago. Now the harm has already been caused,” a student leader said.
Majority of the students have left the various campuses to their homes with just a few left.
“Some of us are from far places. Some are coming from Bolga, Tamale so if they should go back and they call off the strike, it would be a whole lot.”
When contacted, the President of PRINCOF, Professor Samuel Atintono said he was yet to meet with the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and other executives over the matter.
