Lee Carsley has been named interim England manager for the upcoming Nations League matches in September following the departure of Gareth Southgate.
Carsley, 50, transitions from his role as England Under-21 manager to step in for Southgate, who resigned following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.
A former Premier League midfielder with stints at Derby and Everton, Carsley has a wealth of experience in football management. He has previously managed Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham on a caretaker basis before taking over as England Under-20 coach in 2020.
With his deep understanding of the players and the international football cycle, Carsley aims to provide continuity and focus on securing promotion in the UEFA Nations League. He commented:
“As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
Southgate’s tenure saw notable successes, including UEFA European Championship runner-up finishes in 2020 and 2024, a third-place finish in the UEFA Nations League in 2018/19, and a semifinal appearance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where England finished fourth.
Lee Carsley, who led England Under-21s to their first European Championship title in 39 years in 2023, now takes on the role of guiding the senior team through the Nations League campaign.
