The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has reaffirmed the military’s commitment to ensuring the security of Ghana’s borders and the neutrality of the armed forces as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.
During a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Nuhu Osman Sharubutu, at his residence in Fadama, Accra, on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah emphasized the military’s readiness to maintain peace and stability throughout the election period.
The CDS underscored the Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) dedication to upholding professionalism and neutrality during this critical time.
The visit was not only a gesture of respect, but also a plea for guidance and blessings from the Chief Imam, recognizing the significance of spiritual support in his role. Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Dr. Sharubutu for his wise counsel and blessings, which he believed were essential for his leadership and the well-being of the nation.
“I am here to pay homage and seek your guidance and blessings as I take on this significant responsibility within the Ghana Armed Forces. We are committed to supporting the peace and stability of our nation, and your prayers and wisdom are invaluable to us,” Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah stated.
Reiterating the GAF’s pledge, he assured the National Chief Imam that the military would continue to operate with the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality. He highlighted the crucial role the military plays in safeguarding the democratic process and maintaining order before, during, and after the elections.
In response, Sheikh Dr. Sharubutu offered his blessings and well-wishes to the CDS. He emphasized the importance of patience and advised Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah that patience is the cornerstone of success. The Chief Imam’s words resonated with the CDS, who expressed his commitment to embodying this virtue in his leadership.
