Former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has said that the enthusiasm that the selection of Manhyia South Lawmaker Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has generated among supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, their stronghold, is an indication that the party is winning the 2024 general elections.
He stated that anytime the NPP gets 75 percent and above in the Ashanti Region during elections, the party goes ahead to win the overall elections.
To that end, he said, “it is very clear that we are on the road of winning the minimum 75 percent therefore we are winning the election overall.”
The former flagbearer hopeful of the NPP said this in an interview with Eric Mawuena Egbeta on News Central on Tuesday July 9, a day that the NPP is officially outdooring the running mate to the flagbearer Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
The event will take place at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi. The National Council of the NPP unanimously endorsed Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh at an emergency meeting held in Accra on Thursday, July 4.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said that the partnership is an excellent one that will win the 2024 general elections for the NPP.
Speaking to journalists after the confirmation, President Akufo-Addo said, “National Council has endorsed the nomination of Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“The NPP has an excellent ticket and we’re going to win with this ticket on 7th December 2024, that’s the news. The feeling is good, they make a very good pair, and they are going to win.”
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his part thanked the National Council of the NPP for unanimously endorsing his selection of Dr Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh assured members and supporters of the NPP that he will help Dr Bawumia to prosecute a formidable 2024 campaign to break the 8-year election cycle.
He says he understands that the task ahead requires the collective effort. He further called upon all members of the NPP to join hands to collectively strive to achieve their ‘ambitious goal of transforming Ghana into a prosperous nation’.
“I express my gratitude to the National Council, the rank-and-file of our party and our esteemed President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for their unwavering support and faith in me,” he said in a statement immediately after the National Council of the NPP unanimously endorsed him as the running mate on Thursday, July 3.
