The Ghana Action Network (GAN) has thrown its weight behind the upcoming “Hands off our Hotels” demonstration, scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
At a meeting held on Sunday, June 16, 2024, GAN leadership resolved to actively participate in the protest against the proposed sale of state-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Food and Agriculture.
The demonstration, spearheaded by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, aims to challenge President Akufo-Addo’s administration to halt the sale of four hotels managed by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
GAN leadership emphasized their commitment to holding public officials accountable and preventing what they describe as “state capture.”
A notable concern highlighted during their meeting was the alleged acquisition of Labadi Beach Hotel’s beachfront by individuals linked to prominent political figures.
“The intended sale of these state hotels is not just a commercial transaction but a glaring example of state capture,” remarked a spokesperson for GAN. “It is imperative that we, as citizens, stand up against such actions that undermine transparency and public trust.”
GAN has called upon its members and all patriotic Ghanaians to join the demonstration, which will commence at 8:00am in front of Labadi Beach Hotel, proceed through various key locations, and culminate at Jubilee House.
The group seeks to deliver a clear message to the presidency through a formal petition, demanding a reconsideration of the sale.
