The National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Stephen Ntim has described the decision of the Assin Central Member of Parliament(MP), Ken Ohene Agyapong not to resign from the party despite the pressure on him to do so by some of his supporters, as heart-warming.
According to Mr Ntim, the target of the NPP to break the jinx of the 8 in order to retain political power for a third term in office continously would have been difficult if Ken Agyapong had dissociated himself from the national campaign.
He noted that, the Assin Central legislator has been a great asset not only to his constituency but the NPP as a whole in most of the victories of the party.
The Chairman noted that, all the concerns raised by Hon. Agyapong are a reality and would therefore do anything in his capacity to address them.
He commended Mr. Agyapong for his boldness and loyalty to the course of the NPP and called on all members who supported him, to unite as one force for a common goal of the party as the longer stay of the NPP in power is the best guarantee for all people to benefit.
“I have listed to ken, his position today makes the breaking the 8 a reality If a stalwart like Ken had stayed away from the campaign it would have been difficult for the NPP ,” he said during the 64th birthday celebration of MrAgyapong on Sunday June 16
At that event, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong dismissed reports that he would go independent in the December 7 elections.
He has also dispelled rumours that he has resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing friends and loved ones including the National Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, during his 64th birthday celebration on Sunday, June 16, the firebrand lawmaker said he wants the party to have a united front going into the December 7 elections.
“What I want all the party faithfuls to know is that I have not resigned from the party. I am not going independent. I’m still an NPP member.”
He stressed that whatever happened during the primaries are behind him, charging his supporters to rally behind the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for victory.
Ken Agyapong later said several persons have cajoled him to go independent but he doesn’t see such a move as a “wise thing”.
“If you know me very well, I am not selfish and people have come to me several times that ‘Go independent, Go independent’. I think that is not a wise thing to do. Therefore, I have refused to do that. So, I’m pleading with the supporters and NPP party supporters [and] NPP people at large, everywhere, that with united front we can win the election in 2024.”
This gesture by the six-time MP is expected to ease tension within the party as he is seen to be the main threat to the advances of Dr Bawumia in the NPP.
Despite complaining that his supporters are being intimidated by the Vice President’s supporters, he admonished them to rather bury the hatchet and forge ahead in unity.
“So, I’m pleading with my supporters, let’s use my birthday to reconcile. I’m also appealing to the Vice President’s supporters, I know they are intimidating my supporters. If they want us to come together and unite for a united front, then they should also reciprocate the same favours I am rendering on behalf of my supporters.”
