The biggest player in the video streaming space, Netflix has released its metric report for 2023 capturing viewership from January to December 2023.
The Netflix Engagement Report for 2023 said consumers watched 90 billion hours of Netflix in the second half of 2023 while the total for the year stands at 183 billion hours.
The streaming platform released how top 13 films produced in Africa performed within the year under review.
The ranking of the films is based on views which are calculated to be the total hours watched divided by the runtime.
Out of the 13 films ranked, Nigeria occupied 6 spots while South Africa had 7. No other African country showed up in the top 13 released.
Nigerian movie, “The Black Book”, an Anakle film produced in September 2023 starring Richard Mofe-Damijoe, Sam Dede and others was rated as the most watched film in Africa with a staggering 28.3 million views.
The second place, Fatal Seduction and the third, Unseen are all Soth African movies, with 18.3 million views and 18 million views respectively.
Number Number, a South African movie secured the fourth spot with 10 million views while Blood Vessel, a Nigerian movie with 8.9 million views came fifth.
In the sixth and seventh place were Nigerian movies, Shanty Town and A Sunday Affair with 8.2 million views and 7 million views respectively.
Silverton Siege, a South African movie and Jagun Jagun, Nigerian movie are 8th and 9th with 6.7 million views and 4.9 million views respectively.
At 10th, 11th and 12th are Queenstown Kings, South African movie with 4.3 million views; Kings of Jo’burg, South African series with 4.1 million views; and Young, Famous and African, a Nigerian series with 3.5 million views.
The report noted that the combined top 13 African movies cumulated to 126 million views. Seven out of the 13 ranked are movies whiles five of the remaining six series are South African.
