Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has conceded that arch-rivals Real Madrid are the best team in the world at present, following their remarkable achievements this season.
Los Blancos secured an unprecedented 15th Champions League title and their 36th La Liga crown, reaffirming their dominance in European and Spanish football.
In an interview with Infobae, Messi acknowledged Real Madrid’s supremacy based on their results, although he personally favours the playing style of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
“If you go by results, it is Madrid. If you go by how they play, I personally like Guardiola’s City and I think that any team where Guardiola is will be special because of the way he is, the way he coaches and the way he makes his teams play. At a playing level, for me, City is the best. By results, Madrid,” Messi explained to Infobae, as carried by Marca.
The former PSG man also disclosed that he maintains regular contact with Neymar Jr and Luis Suarez through an active group chat. However, he expressed doubt about Neymar joining him at Inter Miami anytime soon. Despite this, the camaraderie between the former Barcelona trio remains strong.
Reflecting on his future, he did not rule out the possibility of participating in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Messi will be 38 years old when the tournament arrives and is taking a realistic approach to his potential involvement.
“It depends on how I feel, how I am physically and being realistic with myself. And knowing if I am up to the task of being able to compete and help the teammates next to me,” Messi stated.
For now, Messi’s focus is on the upcoming Copa America this summer, after which he plans to take a more relaxed approach until the World Cup.
Messi is widely celebrated for his exceptional career with Barcelona, where he often proved to be a significant challenge for Real Madrid. His tenure with the Catalan club also featured a renowned rivalry with Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, Messi plies his trade for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), while Ronaldo plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.
