Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been left out of Belgium’s 25-man squad for Euro 2024.
Courtois’ omission from the national squad follows a public disagreement with Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco last June. The conflict arose when Courtois walked out on the squad after not being named captain following Eden Hazard’s retirement.
This incident cast doubt on his participation in this year’s tournament in Germany, and his absence has now been confirmed with Koen Casteels, Thomas Kaminski, and Matz Sels named as the goalkeepers in Tedesco’s squad.
Meanwhile, Axel Witsel has been recalled to the national team after announcing his international retirement last May.
Belgium will begin their Group E campaign against Slovakia in Frankfurt on June 17, followed by matches against Romania on June 22 and Ukraine on June 26.
Courtois, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury just before the season began in August, only recently returned to action against Cadiz earlier this month.
Despite his recent return, Courtois is favoured to start for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
