A member of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Economy and Finance Committee, Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, has accused the government of neglecting the welfare of Ghanaians and indulging in political maneuvers at the expense of the people in the country.
Speaking to Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on April 5, Dr. Khalid expressed deep concern over what he described as a “worrying trend” that has persisted for far too long in the country and lamented the dire consequences of the power outages, emphasizing that Ghanaians have endured enough.
“It’s not about the people or what the people say. For me, there’s a worrying trend which I think Ghanaians accommodated for far too long and it’s way too late now to stop it,” Dr. Khalid remarked.
He accused the President of taking citizens for granted and playing politics with critical issues such as the power crisis. “The president has taken everyone for granted and decides to do politics when he wants to. What has this got to do with Mahama? So the comparison to say that we leave Dumsor for Mahama, that’s very cheeky,” Dr. Khalid asserted.
Sharing his personal ordeal due to the power outages, Dr. Khalid recounted how he was forced to work from a coffee shop due to the lack of electricity at his home. “Yesterday May Day was meant to be a public holiday, I woke up 6:00am to Dumsor and had to drive out to work in a coffee shop. So, the whole day I was working in a coffee shop because the home was dark and hot, and I had work to catch up on,” he disclosed.
Highlighting the compounding challenges faced by Ghanaians, Dr. Khalid criticized the government’s failure to address the root causes of the current crisis in the country. “We have high increase, cost of living, we have prices of fuel going over the roof then we have Dumsor in addition. So, it’s a compounded problem that we have and yet still, they try to do propaganda with these things,” he stated.
Drawing attention to the government’s excuses for the power outages, Dr. Khalid questioned the priorities of expenditure.
“You look at all these issues and the excuses they gave is we owe independent power providers, we have old transformers. But look at the mandate ECG, they are meant to replace old transformers, they are meant to fix nonfunctional transformers, so of all the expenditure in the CSR of motorbikes they are donating to Police Service, which is not priority service, why are they not providing decent electricity?” he queried.
Dr. Khalid also criticized the shift from postpaid to prepaid electricity billing, arguing that Ghanaians have already paid for the service.
He called for accountability and urged the government to acknowledge the severity of the crisis.
“I think Ghanaians have been very accommodative of this government. When we were in energy crisis during Mahama’s tenure, people use to go on the street to demonstrate, now we are in crisis they are pleading with the government to at least give them a timetable. The brazen disrespect that this government has given the good people of Ghana as far as energy is concerned,” Dr. Khalid stated.
