Former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick has opted to continue as the manager of the Austrian national team, despite engaging in discussions with Bayern Munich earlier this week.
The 65-year-old was in negotiations with Bayern Munich regarding the managerial position, with expectations that he would succeed Thomas Tuchel, who is set to depart at the end of the season.
Rangnick affirmed his commitment to the Austrian team, expressing his dedication to their common objectives.
“I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart,” Rangnick stated. “I would like to expressly emphasise that this is not a rejection of FC Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals.”
Rangnick is slated to lead Austria in the upcoming UEFA European Championship in Germany and is anticipated to fulfill the remainder of his contract, which runs until 2026.
Bayern Munich, in their pursuit of Tuchel’s replacement, have not engaged in discussions with any other managers. Rangnick becomes the second candidate to withdraw from consideration, following Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side recently halted Bayern’s quest for an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title this season. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich played out a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.
Rangnick, who had a brief stint as interim manager at Manchester United during the 2021-22 season, has also managed Ulm, Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke, and RB Leipzig during his career.
Austria reached the round of 16 in the Euro 2021 tournament before being eliminated by eventual champions Italy.
As Bayern Munich continue its search for Tuchel’s successor, Rangnick’s decision narrows down the options for the Bavarian club.
