The fact that more Members of Parliament (MPs) are supporting a particular presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not mean an automatic victory for that candidate, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante Asante, has said.
Dr Asah-Asante indicated that whether or not a candidate would win depends on how best the person sells his message to the delegates who are more than the number of lawmakers going to cast their ballot.
He was commenting on the support that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is enjoying from the NPP lawmakers in the presidential race.
For instance, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said that Dr Bawumia stands tall among all the aspirants.
Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu indicated that Dr Bawumia’s loyalty to the NPP, his experience, and his humility are unmatched.
The Suame lawmaker told TV3 in an interview that “I am looking at the experience of Dr Bawmuia, I am looking at the loyalty to the party, I am looking at his focus, I am looking at his vision, I am looking at his temperament, I am looking at his humility amongst the group, he stands out not just tall but very, very tall.”
But speaking on Ghana Tonight show on TV3 Monday, July 10, Dr Asah-Asante said “I don’t doubt that 100 people or 120 MPs will support Dr Bawumia, there is nothing wrong with that. But the real issue is that, is it the case that that will influence other voters? Not necessarily.
“If you want to go on that route then anytime MPs declare support for a particular candidate obviously that is home and dry, [but] it is not true.”
