The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and its partner transport unions have announced a 20 percent increase in public transport fares, effective Friday, August 8, 2025.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Road Transport Operators said the increment follows the agreed Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares, which allows for adjustments based on changing operational costs.
According to the statement, the new fares are necessary for three main reasons. The operators explained that although fares were reduced by 15 percent in May 2025, there was no corresponding drop in the cost of spare parts, goods, and services.
The GRTCC further stated that the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre levy on fuel has increased fuel prices by about 8 percent, adding pressure on transport operators across the country.
The statement cited the rising cost of vehicle maintenance due to the poor condition of roads nationwide as a key reason for the adjustment.
The new fares, the Road Transport Operators confirmed, will apply to shared taxis, intra-city vehicles (trotros), intercity transport (long-distance buses), and haulage trucks.
The GRTCC is encouraging all transport companies and commercial drivers to comply by posting the new fares clearly at their loading terminals.
It is also appealing to commuters and the general public to cooperate with operators to ensure a smooth transition.
