The management of BH-FERTAGRO, a fertiliser solutions company, has paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of Prisons, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, to explore a potential strategic partnership focused on promoting agricultural development and sustainable farming practices within the prison system.
The meeting, held on Monday at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra and facilitated by Deputy Director of Prisons, DDP Patrick Thomas Seidu, focused on exploring collaborative opportunities that utilise BH-FERTAGRO’s expertise in fertilisers and sustainable agriculture to boost food production within correctional facilities.
This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to rehabilitating and reintegrating inmates by equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge they can apply upon release.
The Managing Director of the fertiliser company, Mr Robert Ayitey, explained the different kinds of support the company plans to offer, including supplying quality fertilisers for large-scale farming and setting up an irrigation system to allow year-round farming on the prison’s 50-acre land at Nsawam.
“We believe that agriculture has the potential to transform lives, and we are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the Prisons Directorate. We are looking forward to adopting the Prison as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility,” Mr Robert reiterated.
He also underscored the need for a collective approach to enhance agricultural development in the prisons.
“By working together, we can create a programme that not only improves food security within the prison system but also equips inmates with practical farming skills that can benefit them and their communities in the future,” he added.
Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie thanked the company and said the partnership would help improve food supply in the prisons.
She added that working with BH-FERTAGRO could also offer useful farming training and tools to help create a productive setting that supports inmate rehabilitation and reduces repeat offences.
“This project will focus on improving food preparation areas, providing better kitchen equipment, and training staff in nutrition and food safety,” the Director-General stated.
During the visit, the BH-FERTAGRO team also talked about starting farming training programmes specially designed for the inmates.
The proposed partnership aims to provide vocational farming training, allowing inmates to grow crops and run sustainable farming activities while gaining practical experience.
“We strongly believe that as a company we can even do more beyond for the inmates, so we are looking at exploring other initiatives for inmates who leave here by providing them some farming inputs and other support that will help them with the farming activities so that they’re able to integrate well in their communities”, Mr Alex Kwame Donyinah, General Manager of B-H FERTAGRO mentioned.
BH-FERTAGRO and the Prisons Directorate are hopeful that this partnership will help build a better future for inmates and support the growth of agriculture in the country.
