
Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum, Ghana’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) goal scorer, has died at age 88.
He died on Sunday, May 11, after a brief illness.
Nicknamed “The Bulldozer,” Mfum made history in 1963 by scoring Ghana’s first-ever goal at the AFCON.
His brace in the final against Sudan was instrumental in securing Ghana its first AFCON title in 1963.
Mfum went on to score 18 more goals in 26 appearances for the Black Stars and was also part of Ghana’s squad at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The towering figure began his club career with Kumasi Asante Kotoko from 1962 to 1967, before moving to the United States to play for the Baltimore Bays Club in 1968 and then joined Ukrainian SC of the German American Soccer League in 1969.
Mfum also featured for Ukrainian Nationals and America Major League soccer side, New York Cosmos.
