Pupils and teachers of Eguafo Breman MA Basic School in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central region have received a major sanitation boost following the commissioning of a modern six-unit washroom facility by Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL).
A mechanized borehole have been constructed in addition to provision of polytank to aid in free flow of water for use for the facility. The facility, which is believed to be the first of its kind in a public basic school in the District, is expected to improve sanitation and hygiene conditions for pupils and staff.

Constructed at a cost of GH¢272,000 – the washroom facility was officially handed over to the school during a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, education officials, community members and representatives of the company.
The project comes exactly two years after GREL constructed and handed over a six-unit nursery classroom block to the school, further strengthening the learning environment for young pupils in the community.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Corporate Affairs Manager of GREL, Perry Acheampong, said the initiative forms part of the company’s commitment to improving the quality of life in communities that host its operations.
He noted that access to clean and safe sanitation facilities play a critical role in ensuring a healthy and supportive learning environment for children.
“Today’s event goes beyond the commissioning of a sanitation facility. It reflects our continued commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities that host our operations,” the Corporate Affairs Manager of GREL said.

Mr. Perry Acheampong explained that education remains the foundation of every progressive society, adding that children must learn in environments that promote dignity, hygiene and good health.
He said GREL’s corporate social responsibility programmes focused on improving education, health and infrastructure in rural communities where rubber farmers live and work.
“The success of GREL is closely linked to the hard work of thousands of rubber farmers who sustain the industry. That is why we believe agribusiness must drive rural development and create opportunities for communities,” he added.
The Municipal Education Director for KEEA, Ekua Mercy Liza, commended the company for its continuous support to education in the area. She said the new facility would greatly improve sanitation and hygiene practices in the school while creating a healthier learning environment for pupils.
“Education thrives best in an environment that is safe, clean and supportive. Adequate sanitation facilities are, therefore, not just an infrastructure need, but an essential component of quality education and child welfare,” she said.
She urged school authorities, pupils and the community to ensure proper maintenance of the facility so it can serve future generations of students.
The Chief of Eguafo Abirem, Nana Dadzie I, also expressed appreciation to GREL for the intervention.
He noted that the company receives numerous requests for development projects from its host communities, but still found it necessary to support the school.
“I am happy GREL has provided this facility for the school despite the many requests the company receives from its host communities,” he said.
Residents say the facility will help promote proper hygiene practices among pupils while easing sanitation challenges that previously confronted the school.
The project forms part of GREL’s broader efforts to invest in education and community development in areas where the company operates.
