Six people, including a months-old baby, have sustained gunshot injuries after a jubilant supporter opened fire indiscriminately at Kwabenakwa in the Obuasi East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The shooting incident reportedly occurred after a section of the royal family, involved in a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, won a court ruling in their favour. In a moment of excitement, the group took to the streets to celebrate — firing multiple gunshots into the air.
Eyewitnesses say one of the jubilants, identified as Kofi Cole, a relative of the victorious family, joined others in a Pragyia (tricycle) to celebrate, during which he allegedly fired several rounds, injuring six innocent bystanders.
Some of the victims and their relatives told reporters that they were going about their normal activities when stray bullets struck them unexpectedly. Among the injured is a baby said to be only a few months old.
The Assembly Member for Kwabenakwa, Mr. Charles Abu, confirmed the incident and described it as “a needless tragedy that could have been avoided.” He said he immediately rushed to the scene to help convey the victims to hospital and informed the police, who have since launched an investigation.
Police have reportedly begun a manhunt for Kofi Cole, who fled the scene after the incident.
Residents have since condemned the reckless gunfire and called on the authorities to ensure justice for the victims.
