An GH¢8.4 million Robotic Centre constructed by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine to benefit the youth in its host communities has been commissioned at a colourful ceremony at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
The Managing Director of AGA, Ing. Samuel Pobee, noted at the commissioning ceremony that the Centre was not just a building, but a beacon of hope, a launchpad for imagination and a gift for the future of Obuasi.
He explained that the Robotic Centre was designed to benefit every youth in the mine’s host communities, to inspire in them a lifelong curiosity and to cultivate the skills necessary for them to become engineers, coders, problem-solvers, entrepreneurs as well as nation builders.
Ing. Samuel Pobee said as part of the company’s broader educational agenda, it is committed to equipping the schools to put up with modern technology to drive and deepen STEM education across Obuasi.
“We recognize that the majority of job opportunities at the Mine are STEM related and it is our vision to inspire our young ones to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. What we see today is what a responsible mining should look like. Mining that empowers. Mining that transforms lives not just for today, but for generations to come,” he said.
The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Amankra Appiah, said the Centre was more than a physical structure and that it was a symbol of possibility, innovation and progress.
He pointed out that in an era where technology was rapidly reshaping the global economy, it had become absolutely essential that “we prepare our young people with the tools and mindset not only to survive, but to live in a digital age.”
The Regional Director was of the view that beyond the economic contributions that AGA had made to Obuasi, the construction of the Robotic Centre reflected a profound understanding of the long term value of human capital development.
The Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, expressed her appreciation to AngloGold towards the development of Obuasi especially in the area of education, skills development and youth empowerment.
“By fostering a culture of innovation with the construction of the Robotic Centre, we are preparing our students to become leaders, inventors and problem-solvers who will drive progress in our municipality and beyond,” the MCE added.
Nana Osei Kwame, Amaniehene of Edubiase Divisional Area, who represented the Edubiasehene, was hopeful that God would shower his blessings on the Company tomaximize profits from its operations to be able to continue to support the development of its host communities and by extension Ghana.
