Voting at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was abruptly suspended on Tuesday following violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North constituency election rerun.
The incident unfolded when a group of unidentified men arrived in a pickup vehicle and stormed the polling station, which was under police protection. Eyewitnesses say the group forced their way in and began physically assaulting individuals at the scene.
Among those reportedly attacked was former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson. Witnesses described the attack as highly coordinated, sparking panic among voters and disrupting the electoral process.
Security forces were swiftly deployed to regain control of the situation and restore calm, allowing voting to resume after a temporary halt.
The rerun, conducted in 19 polling stations, was organized by the Electoral Commission to resolve a protracted dispute from the December 7, 2024, general elections. The exercise aimed to restore parliamentary representation to the Ablekuma North constituency, which has been without an MP since then.
Tensions were already high ahead of the rerun, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially boycotting the exercise, citing concerns over fairness. However, the party’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, defied the directive and participated in the election.
The violent incident has further deepened political uncertainty in the area.
