The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly rejected a decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a rerun of polling station elections in 19 locations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to the party, the move is unlawful, contradicts a High Court order, and lacks justification.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong described the EC’s decision as “disingenuous and unlawful,” and accused the Commission of bowing to political pressure from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“The EC’s claim that scanned results from 19 polling stations were not verified by presiding officers, even though approved by agents of both parties, is an afterthought. It contradicts earlier confirmations from the EC itself that only three polling stations remain to be collated,” Kodua stated.
The EC had issued a statement on July 2 explaining that a rerun in the 19 polling stations was necessary due to the lack of verification by presiding officers.
However, the NPP insists the EC had already collated results from 59 out of 62 polling stations that were left uncollated in Ablekuma North following the 2024 general elections.
In January 2025, the High Court ordered the EC to complete outstanding collation exercises in four constituencies: Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South. While the process was completed in the other constituencies, the EC has failed to finalize results in Ablekuma North.

Mr. Kodua blamed repeated disruptions at the collation centre on alleged attacks by NDC-affiliated thugs, citing a January 17 EC statement that accused the NDC of storming the collation centre and destroying electoral materials.
“Despite these disruptions, the EC managed to collate 59 of the 62 polling station results between December 21, 2024, and January 8, 2025, in the presence of party agents and EC officials. This leaves only three polling stations to be collated—not 19,” he stressed.
The NPP also accused the EC of excluding one of the three outstanding polling stations—Glory Land Hotel Odorkor (Polling Station Code: C161205A)—from the new list of 19 stations set for rerun.
“No law in Ghana gives the EC the authority to order a rerun of elections it has duly conducted. That power rests solely with the courts,” the General Secretary said, citing provisions of the Constitution, the Representation of the People Law, and the Public Elections Regulations.
The party further alleged that the EC’s reversal may have been influenced by threats from senior NDC figures to remove EC commissioners from office. They pointed to remarks made by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and others as evidence of political interference.
“The EC is supposed to be an independent constitutional body. It must not take instructions from Asiedu Nketiah or the NDC,” Kodua said. “Ghana’s democracy must not be hijacked by thuggery or political coercion.”
The NPP has indicated its intention to challenge the EC’s decision in court and reiterated its belief that its parliamentary candidate, Hon. Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, won the December 2024 election in Ablekuma North with 34,613 votes against the NDC’s 34,199.
“We will pursue every legal avenue to ensure the will of the people of Ablekuma North is respected,” Mr. Kodua concluded.
