The Office of the Attorney-General has filed a motion before the High Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) in Accra, seeking to fast-track proceedings in a criminal trial involving Solomon Asamoah and Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Minister of State and academic.
The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, filed a “Motion on Notice for Abridgement of Time” on Friday, June 27, 2025, requesting that the hearing date for an application by the second accused, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, be brought forward from July 9 to July 3, 2025.
In the motion, the Attorney-General is seeking the Court’s permission to hear Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s request for three orders: to strike out the charge sheet, refer the case to the Supreme Court, or stay proceedings entirely.
The accompanying affidavit, sworn by Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali, argues that the second accused’s motion—filed on June 24—was made in bad faith with the intention of delaying the trial. Tali emphasized that such tactics undermine the constitutional requirement for a speedy trial and could result in “unreasonable delay.”
“The motion was filed with a well-defined intention to delay the proceedings,” the affidavit stated. “Considering that an applicant who files a motion would have been fully prepared to move the same before filing, an abridgement of time to July 3, 2025, will occasion no miscarriage of justice.”
The prosecution further contends that the constitutional imperative for expeditious justice warrants an earlier hearing, especially as the motion involves substantial procedural challenges to the trial itself.
Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Education Minister and academic, and his co-accused, Solomon Asamoah, are currently facing undisclosed criminal charges filed by the Republic. The details of the charges are yet to be made public.
The motion is scheduled to be moved before the Criminal Division of the High Court at 9:00 a.m. on July 3, 2025, or shortly thereafter. The outcome could have significant implications for the pace and direction of the trial.
